D.D. Williamson to Sell Caramel Color to Consumers

Business First of Louisville - August 2, 2001

Louisville-based D.D. Williamson Co. Inc. has begun selling its caramel food coloring to consumers who want to enhance the color of their foods.

Williamson, which has for decades sold the coloring to food scientists, professional chefs and food manufacturers that use the product to darken the color of foods and beverages, has never offered the product to general consumers, according to a news release.

Williamson will offer the coloring — made by cooking corn syrup, — on its Web site, http://www.caramel.com, the release said. The Web site also contains recipes for breads, sauces, gravies, and other foods that can be made using the caramel coloring.

“Caramel color is a key tool the pros use to make their foods look more delicious,” Ted Nixon, CEO of D.D. Williamson, said in the release. “This marks the first time a producer has made the ingredient available to everyone — not just the food industry.”

D.D. Williamson, which was established in 1865, is a food ingredient manufacturer that boasts that it is the world’s largest manufacturer of caramel coloring. The company has seven plants on five continents.
